Attorneys Here, There & Everywhere

In the Community:
Last month, Family Center attorneys went above and beyond in providing legal services to members of our community.  Amid a heavy caseload, attorneys made presentations and worked with clients at Legacy House, a supporting housing program for those living with HIV and mental health issues.  Attendees worked with our attorneys to create wills, healthcare proxies, and other Advanced Directives.  On two other occasions, TFC attorneys also ran legal clinics at Palladia, which is a supportive housing facility for New Yorkers recovering from substance abuse or living with mental health challenges.

In Law Schools:
Consistent with The Family Center’s ongoing efforts to have law students work directly with New Yorkers in need of assistance, our attorneys attended events at New York Law School and Columbia University Law School.  At NYLS, attorneys met with students to tell them about our work, how they can get involved and offer them expert advice on nonprofit careers in the law.  At Columbia University, we participated in a student mock interview program.  We have more appearances at local law schools coming up.  To learn more about how to volunteer with TFC Legal Services Department, click here.

In the Courts:
Of course, February would not have been complete without victories in the courts for Family Center attorneys.  One case was that of Yasmina, a survivor of domestic violence who was forced to sue her abusive husband for divorce and custody of their young child.  Thanks to a Family Center attorney providing this mother with excellent representation, Yasmina and her child are now together and safe.  Last month, attorneys resolved that and 107 other cases successfully.
