Spreading Hope, One Pencil Case at a Time

This September, volunteers from Nuveen gathered to assemble pencil cases for the children and teens, whom we work with. Each pencil case was filled with an assortment of essential school supplies: pencils, pens, sharpeners, and erasers. And it didn't end there! Each case also contained a handwritten note of encouragement –a touch of personal warmth and kindness that will surely light up the faces of The Family Center children and teens who receive them. Phrases like "Believe in yourself," and "You are special," can create a lasting impact on the lives of the children we serve. These heartfelt messages will serve as a reminder that they are not alone on their journey, and that there are people out there who care deeply about their well-being and their future.

Nuveen's volunteers met at 11am. For two hours, they dedicated their time and effort to assembling pencil cases, writing notes, and packing them into boxes with love. It was a joyful sight to witness, as the room was filled with the hum of voices and the rustling of supplies.

Everyone at The Family Center is grateful to Nuveen for dedicating an afternoon to our young students and their growth. The children we work with at The Family Center are all grappling with the challenges of family loss, crisis, illness, or bereavement. And 96% of them are also living in families on incomes below the federal poverty threshold.

These pencil cases may seem like a simple gift, but they carry with them the promise of hope, encouragement, and a brighter future. Thanks to Nuveen's generosity, our children will start the school year with a tangible reminder that they have a community that cares about them!
