Creative groups are a hallmark of what distinguishes The Family Center as community where clients are encouraged to use their voices.
Recently, Bed-Stuy artist, author, and educator, Angeli Rasbury, led a creative writing group for our caregivers, Family Center clients raising children not biologically theirs. Caregivers wrote down their thoughts based on specific cues given by Angeli and then discussed their writing in a virtual group format.
Simultaneously, Rachell Morillo from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) led a comic book group for Family Center youth. The group taught the basics of creating a comic book, including drawing skills and techniques. The plan is to compile youth artists’ pieces into a collective comic book that will be featured on MoMA's website or Twitter feed.

Call me flowers I don’t mind. Don’t pluck me, just look at me, that is just fine. Just want to stand here for a little while, feeling the wind blow through my hair and sing a kind song loud and clear. I feel pretty and bright. I might even stretch my neck to see the sun shining red rays upon my head, or I might want to visit a beach somewhere, anywhere. I don’t care right now. I want to brush the sand from my feet all because I did the funky chicken [dance] on some faraway beach.
