Clients at The Family Center are flexing their creative muscles these days as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has generously brought its Community Programs to our agency!  MoMA fuels creativity, ignites minds, and provides inspiration.  And now this is happening right in the heart of Brooklyn at our Bedford-Stuyvesant office!

Over the summer, clients in our Familia Unida Latina (FUL), a peer-led Spanish-speaking support group, came together to learn about and explore modern art with MoMA Teaching Artist Shellyne Rodriguez.  After discussion, FUL clients worked with Ms. Rodriguez to create their own totem out of items that reminded them of passed loved ones.  Their piece featured everything from a coffee cup and banana (in memory of a client’s father who lived into his 80’s and drank a cup of coffee and had a banana every day for breakfast) to a small figurine of SpongeBob SquarePants (in memory of one client’s young son who died).

This piece will be on display at MoMA from September 19th through October 9th as part of the (RE)PRESENT exhibition, showcasing new artwork from MoMA’s Community Partnership Program.
